Overactive Bladder (OAB)

What is Overactive Bladder?

Overactive Bladder (OAB) is a condition where the bladder muscles contract too often, creating a frequent and urgent need to urinate. Some people may also experience involuntary leakage, known as urge incontinence. OAB can affect anyone, though it’s more common in adults over 40.

Common Symptoms:

  • Sudden, strong urges to urinate

  • Frequent trips to the bathroom, often more than 8 times a day

  • Urgency that’s difficult to control

  • Occasional leakage (urge incontinence)

  • Nighttime urination (nocturia)

Causes & Triggers:

OAB can be caused by a variety of factors including:

  • Overactive bladder muscles

  • Nerve issues affecting bladder signals

  • Bladder irritation from infection or inflammation

  • Certain medications or foods that irritate the bladder

Management & Treatment:

While OAB can be frustrating, there are ways to manage it:

  • Lifestyle changes: Limiting caffeine and alcohol, bladder training, and pelvic floor exercises

  • Medications: Drugs that relax bladder muscles or improve bladder control

  • Devices or therapies: Nerve stimulation or specialized catheters in severe cases

  • Support & community: Sharing experiences and strategies can make living with OAB easier
