Interstitial Cystitis (IC)
What is Interstitial Cystitis?
Interstitial Cystitis, also known as Painful Bladder Syndrome, is a chronic condition that causes bladder pain, pressure, and frequent urination. Unlike a urinary tract infection, IC is not caused by bacteria, and symptoms can range from mild discomfort to severe pain that affects daily life.
Common Symptoms:
-
Chronic bladder pain or pressure
-
Frequent urination, sometimes more than 60 times per day in severe cases
-
Urgency to urinate, often with little urine output
-
Pain during sexual activity
-
Discomfort that worsens as the bladder fills
Causes & Triggers:
The exact cause of IC isn’t fully understood, but potential contributors include:
-
Bladder lining defects that allow irritating substances to penetrate
-
Nerve dysfunction causing heightened bladder sensitivity
-
Autoimmune reactions or chronic inflammation
-
Triggers such as caffeine, acidic foods, alcohol, or stress
Management & Treatment:
While there’s no cure for IC, symptoms can be managed:
-
Lifestyle adjustments: Identifying triggers, following an IC-friendly diet, and stress management
-
Medications: Bladder instillations, oral medications, or pain relief options
-
Therapies: Physical therapy for pelvic floor muscles, nerve stimulation, or bladder treatments
-
Support & community: Connecting with others living with IC provides understanding, tips, and emotional support
