Bladder Retention

What is Bladder Retention?

Bladder Retention, also called urinary retention, is the inability to fully empty the bladder. It can be acute (sudden and severe) or chronic (developing slowly over time) and may lead to discomfort, infections, or other complications if left untreated.

Common Symptoms:

  • Difficulty starting urination

  • Weak urine stream or dribbling

  • Feeling that the bladder is not fully empty

  • Frequent urination in small amounts

  • Lower abdominal or pelvic discomfort

Causes & Triggers:

Bladder retention can be caused by a variety of factors:

  • Blockages in the urinary tract (e.g., enlarged prostate, bladder stones)

  • Nerve problems (neurogenic bladder)

  • Medications that affect bladder function

  • Weakened bladder muscles

  • Post-surgical complications

Management & Treatment:

Treatment depends on the cause and severity:

  • Catheterisation: Temporary or intermittent use to empty the bladder

  • Medications: To relax the bladder or relieve obstruction

  • Surgical options: To remove blockages or correct structural issues

  • Lifestyle strategies: Timed voiding, fluid management, and monitoring
