Bladder Prolapse (Cystocele)

What is Bladder Prolapse?

Bladder Prolapse, also known as a Cystocele, occurs when the bladder drops from its normal position and pushes into the vaginal wall. This is usually caused by weakened pelvic floor muscles or tissues, often due to pregnancy, childbirth, or aging. Bladder prolapse can lead to discomfort, urinary problems, and a feeling of pressure in the pelvic area.

Common Symptoms:

  • A feeling of pressure or fullness in the pelvis or vagina

  • Urinary incontinence or leakage

  • Difficulty emptying the bladder fully

  • Frequent urinary tract infections

  • Bulging tissue in the vagina

Causes & Triggers:

Bladder prolapse occurs when the supportive tissues between the bladder and vaginal wall weaken:

  • Pregnancy and vaginal childbirth

  • Aging and menopause

  • Chronic coughing or heavy lifting

  • Obesity or increased abdominal pressure

  • Previous pelvic surgery

Management & Treatment:

Treatment depends on severity and symptoms:

  • Pelvic floor exercises (Kegels): Strengthen muscles to support the bladder

  • Pessaries: Devices inserted into the vagina to support the bladder

  • Lifestyle adjustments: Weight management, avoiding heavy lifting

  • Surgery: In more severe cases, procedures restore bladder position and support
